Authorities and police consistently urge all two-wheeler riders to wear helmets without fail. Yet, many people continue to neglect this critical safety advice. In road accidents, victims often face multiple complications, especially serious head injuries. These can lead to internal brain hemorrhages or even more severe consequences. In some cases, other parts of the body are affected too.
One such case was recently handled by Dr. M.V.N. Suresh, Head of Emergency Medicine at Aster Prime Hospital, Hyderabad.
“A man was brought to our hospital after suffering severe injuries in a road accident,” Dr. Suresh said.
“He wasn’t wearing a helmet, which resulted in a fractured jawbone. Had he worn a proper full-face helmet, he would have avoided injuries to his face or head. Unfortunately, due to his carelessness and not wearing a helmet, the accident caused a serious jaw fracture.”
Following emergency assessments, the medical team decided that surgery was necessary.
Dr. Suresh explained:
“When arms or legs are fractured, regular plaster application or surgery usually suffices. But with a jawbone fracture, it's more complex because the jaw must move up and down — it's essential for eating, speaking, and daily functions. So, a plastic surgeon was brought in to perform the surgery, which was successfully completed.”
He emphasized that wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler can prevent such injuries entirely. Facial injuries are often delicate, and in more serious cases, head injuries can lead to internal bleeding and even death.
“If the brain is damaged, restoring it to normal function becomes extremely difficult,” Dr. Suresh added.
“When accidents occur, the impact is usually sudden and forceful, and the head tends to hit hard surfaces like the road, causing severe trauma.”
The only way to prevent this is to wear a good-quality full-face helmet that offers complete protection to the head, brain, and face.
“Helmets don’t just save lives — they prevent many kinds of injuries and long-term suffering,” Dr. Suresh concluded.
